Fillings

Dental fillings are also known as dental restorations and are used to repair damaged teeth, usually as a result of tooth decay. It is important to remember that cleaning and flossing your teeth correctly and visiting us for regular check-ups can prevent decay and avoid the need for fillings.

What happens if I need a filling?

At Dentistry with Care Chatswood, we will start by talking to you to about the right type of restoration for you.

We’ll make sure you are as comfortable as possible. Then we’ll give you pain relief to numb the area and make sure you don’t feel a thing. We also offer Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas.

Then, we’ll painlessly remove any decay. We clean and dry the cavity and the fill it to return it to its original shape and appearance.

In our practice, we offer the choice of:

  • tooth-coloured or ‘white’ fillings
  • dental amalgam (also known as ‘silver’ fillings)

Tooth-coloured fillings

Also described as ‘composite’ or ‘white’, tooth-coloured fillings are a way of restoring a tooth and maintaining a natural appearance.

They use a strong composite bond, giving a strong but natural looking appearance matching the colour of your teeth. This will provide long-term strength and an aesthetically pleasing result that many patients find less sensitive to hot and cold.

Dentists have used tooth-coloured fillings in front teeth for cosmetic reasons for many years. Recent improvements have made tooth-coloured fillings more affordable and they are now a popular choice for many patients.

There may be some rare occasions when we recommend using amalgam for a tooth in a part of the mouth that can’t be seen and which receives a lot of wear and tear. However, it is always your choice whether you opt for white or silver restorations at the end of the day.
